Полиция ведет расследование. Главные подозреваемые - исполнительница главной женской роли Дорис Терри, дублер Вудфорда Куэйл и партнер Вудфорда Карлтон, который так же, как Куэйл и Вудфорд, влюблен в юную Дорис. К моменту прибытия коронера труп исчезает. Дело закрыто за неимением улик. Через 3 года театр вновь открывается по инициативе драматурга Макхью (на самом деле это полицейский инспектор), который хочет заново поставить «Ловушку» (пьесу, ставшую роковой для Вудфорда) с первоначальным актерским составом. В заброшенном и грязном театре, заваленном старыми бумагами и заросшем паутиной, возобновляются репетиции. На них присутствуют хозяева театра братья Баунзы. Старший, мрачный тип с неприятной стариковской внешностью, получает телеграмму за подписью Вудфорда, запрещающую ему открывать театр. Баунз-младший, по характеру более фривольный, ухлестывает за молодой актрисой труппы. Карлтон, получивший роль Вудфорда, находит в своем тексте угрозы смертью. Вскоре после этого Макхью и несколько актеров оказываются заперты в ложе, из-под двери которой сочится дым. Макхью выламывает дверь. Чуть позже Дорис чудом избегает смерти, когда с колосников на нее обрушивается часть декорации (лестница). На репетиции «роковой» сцены Карлтон падает замертво, совсем как Вудфорд, и исчезает. За стенами слышны крики и шорохи. Макхью ломает перегородку, за которой спрятана бывшая гримерная Вудфорда; оттуда через тайный проход появляется Карлтон, который тут же падает на землю и умирает. Ряд улик указывают на Дорис и Куэйлл. Чтобы доказать свою невиновность, последний вызывается сыграть роль Вудфорда. Макхью, получивший «последнее предупреждение», после которого его должна настигнуть смерть, вызывает подкрепление. Начинается премьера. Макхью уже знает, что благодаря хитроумному механизму к канделябру подведен электрический провод, который может ударить мощным разрядом того, кто дотронется до канделябра. В критический момент Макхью останавливает спектакль. Декорации улетают под самый потолок. Убийца, прятавшийся в напольных часах, испаряется, словно призрак, улизнув через люк. За ним долго гонятся по всему театру. Наконец преследователям удается сорвать с него маску: это заведующий постановочной частью. Он говорит, что Баунз-младший заставил его разыграть эту комбинацию, чтобы позднее выкупить по низкой цене акции театра. На уровне сюжета перед нами - классический «whodunit» (от англ. «who's done it?» - «кто это сделал?»: детективная интрига, построенная на затянувшемся поиске виновного) с участием множества персонажей, описанных с большим юмором и наделенных внешней выразительностью; действие фильма происходит в замкнутом пространстве, прекрасно подготовленном для самых разнообразных виртуозных технических трюков. В этих же декорациях снимался знаменитый Призрак оперы, The Phantom of the Opera. На визуальном уровне есть невероятная работа камеры, которая в руках выдающегося мастера Хэла Мора (работавшего также с Кёртизом и Фейошем), скользит и проникает повсюду: под занавес сцены, в щели между декорациями и т. д. В субъективных планах она забавляется, рождая перед нашими глазами образ старухи, лицо которой покрыто паутиной, или «призрака», балансирующего на веревке. Неважно, что сюжет оставляет нас холодными как мрамор. Главное, что большинство планов и сегодня удивляют и восхищают своей виртуозностью. Они в последний раз перед приходом слова воссоздают парадоксальную магию молчания на театральной сцене - в месте, нашпигованном ловушками и капканами, потайными ходами, затененными углами, откуда можно наблюдать, не опасаясь быть увиденным, декорациями, возникающими ниоткуда или исчезающими внезапно.N.В. Существует и звуковая версия, крайне неуклюжая, если верить критике тех лет; в ней содержится 25 мин диалогов из 87 мин общей продолжительности фильма.
